Blackberry Launchers and Icons

To add a desktop application or web bookmark icon on the Blackberry desktop … you need a signed Java app (aka launcher) and icon file.

BBLauncher.com allows non-programmers, or programmers who don’t want to pay RIM $20.00 for a master certificate, to create a launcher for $3.00 each.

For best rollover icon results, prepare two png images with transparent backgrounds between 28×28 and 64×64 pixels (I use 45×45) in size, with at least a 4 pixel transparent border.

To create a universally-appealing icon, draw a thin white border around your icon image. (See the Twitter logo for an example of what that looks like.)

Note that different Blackberry models have different desktop environments. Some examples:

  • 8700 has a white background and no folders
  • 9700 has a black background and launchers are saved in the Downloads folder

According to BBLauncher.com support, “The [icon animation] transition can not take effect until your either run the launcher once or fully reboot the device because it’s impossible for us to register the rollover icon until the application is started the first time or when the device boots up.”
