Installed Wordpress (this blogging software) to evaluate. Although it’s written in PHP (not Perl as I would prefer), I can live with Wordpress’ GPL license, unlike Movable Type’s ever-evolving commercial license. Both use MySQL. (Blosxom was simple, nasty and did not run at all under mod_perl last time I checked, so that disqualified it.)
My initial impressions of Wordpress are:
- unclear how admin and user roles relate
- the randomized blog roll is cute
- pretty easy to install, mostly just copying a few directories around
- would like slashdot-style automatic category icons on front page and archive pages
- working on getting the dropcaps plugin working
- time of day is wrong with weather icon – see nite at 5 pm?
- need category preamble intro paragraph
- does not generate static HTML pages like MT, although there is caching?
- when editing a category, the Save button incorrectly still says “edit category”
- smiley parsing is broken in the first column, perhaps deliberately?
